Guyana currently has more than 150 hotels, along with 30 resorts and lodges that provide an approximate room capacity of 3,400. The advancement of the tourism sector has been severely hampered by significant skills gaps existing at all levels. This has often been compounded by the fact that there exist few opportunities for training to be done locally. There are multiple hotel projects being launched in Guyana including six new international hotel chains commencing construction in 2021. This will see an increased demand for qualified hospitality professionals to meet the demand.
Texila American University is well poised to meet this demand with its new partnership with the Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality (CTH. With this partnership, Texila aims to launch hospitality training programs for the first time ever in Guyana which will support the much-needed skilled workforce.
Different levels of the program through CTH will open new avenues for students interested in pursuing a career in tourism and hospitality. This degree will help students enter the travel and tourism sector, get hands-on experience in areas such as customer service, and gain opportunities to work in international hotels, restaurants, and other organizations.
These programs will enable students to become “manager ready” for the tourism and hospitality sector all in the span of 3 years.
Under the MoU signed by Texila American University with the Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality CTH (UK), the university will offer foundation and diploma courses for Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) students and Advanced Diploma with pre-qualification in hospitality training.
a. CTH Level 3: Foundation Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism
b. CTH Level 4: Diploma in Hospitality Management
c. CTH Level 5: Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management
After successful completion of this program, the student will be awarded a UK diploma and eventually a degree after successfully completing three levels. This program will provide students with great opportunities to build a career in the tourism and hospitality industry.
Texila has received approval from CTH and is now working with the local regulatory authorities for its approval prior to the launch.
